St. Claire

Artist Info
St. Claire is a Boston-based band which includes siblings Emily and Glenn Forsythe. They left their native state of Ohio and spent years traveling in the USA and abroad. Most of the songs on their record Everyone Lives Here were written by Emily when she was living in a hundred year-old attic in a small town in France. For the Secret Stereo, they share three home-recorded cover songs.

Can you tell me why you chose to cover each of these songs?

I love them and they really represent the ways I love songs to be written.

You're originally from Ohio, but now are based in Boston. Your debut album Everyone Lives Here was recorded and produced near your Boston home. How has Boston shaped St. Claire? Do you feel like you are a part of a community?
I love the musicians here in Boston. They are my good friends and make me constantly want to be a better songwriter. They really have made me feel welcome in the community here, which is such an important part of being a musician for me.
In the song 'My Eyes and My Fears', you sing "I love summer and winter / I love you and another / Took off the face of my killer / She's got my eyes and my fears". It's a truly haunting moment on the recording, just this side of scary. Can you talk about the lyric?
I'm not good at talking about any lyrics, really. They just sort of come out but I do think about them later sometimes. I've never really thought about this one. I guess I've always been a bit afraid of some opposite living inside. I always think that if one side exists, another has to be there to balance it out. I admit that I like that you think it's scary.
Does the song 'Georgia' relate to the 1995 Jennifer Jason Leigh film of the same name?
What film? I don't really get out much.
Who are some of your favorite singers?
As far as women, I'll always love Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Cat Power, P.J. Harvey, and a lot of French singers from the sixties...
What is inspiring to you?
Hearing someone say something I've never heard before always makes me wake up.
What is it like working closely with your brother in St. Claire?
Glenn and I can't really imagine doing music with anyone else. We've always been close and it helps to work with someone who can practically read your mind. We've been spoiled all these years working together.
Were there any defining moments for you in 2010? What are you looking forward to in 2011?
Well, we're planning on moving to New York this spring, so I guess that's the biggest change in store for us. Other than that we really just want to be touring as much as possible.
St. Claire, or Clare of Assisi, is the patron saint of television. How do ya like that?
TV? I don't think she was alive at the time on TV. The name St. Claire was just an altered version of my middle name. However, I was very happy to find out that she is an official incorruptible... I'm not religious at all, but I'm really into the incorruptibles. They're catholic saints who never decayed. They dug up St. Claire and she was all intact. How's that for scary?
